Increase the Contrast
Unfortunately, one of the most neglected and underutilised tactics is incorporating additional contrast.
Joost de Valk allows excellent use of narrow, high-contrast lines that help the consumer differentiate between various sections of the website. Gradients appear on almost every page on Media Temple’s website, but moderation and subtlety are the keys to the design’s success. To highlight the text, the branding, headlines, keys, and backgrounds all have slight or small gradients. The most complicated gradients on the website can be seen on basic 120-pixel-wide buttons designed to catch the eye.
The style is a little daring, and it succeeds for the most part, but it has a few big flaws. The most critical aspect is that there is little continuity. Designers could carefully choose just a few styles of gradient for each project, similar to how they might pick a sensible colour palette.
The broad horizontal gradient (1), for example, draws the eye over the width of the page. That isn’t a challenge in and of itself, but there’s a radial gradient (2) dragging the eye towards the middle of the page and another linear fade (3) pulling the eye down and over to the bottom-right corner of the log-in box right below it. This causes the consumer to become perplexed, and the choppy visual flow renders it impossible to read.
It is critical to maintain a good visual flow when dealing with gradients: utilising gradients sparingly or subtly. Most notably, just include them as they add to the overall atmosphere of the project.
The colour
It may be difficult to use colour effectively. It’s quick to waste so much time colouring the template and it’s difficult to come up with a perfect palette and decide where to place each sound.
Realmac Software takes a risk by welcoming the whole colour range onto its 404 page. This works for a variety of purposes. To begin, Realmac has placed the page on a neutral grey background. More interestingly, with the exception of the blue text ties and the few splashes of colour just below the fold, it hasn’t used colour anywhere else on the internet.
Though the full-spectrum palette draws eyes right away, it is still plain, and the use of grey prevents it from being too distracting. Attempting to use more than four or five colours in a single template is normally overwhelming. If you are certain that the style needs more than four colours, stick to basic four-colour palettes.
It is also simpler to attract focus to essential things when you use colour sparingly and intelligently in your design. Viewers are led to the dash of colour in the emblem at the top of the website, then straight to the headings, and finally to the logo to the right of the page material on Interspire’s “About Us” page.
Font manipulation. Typography is a much more complex craft that any of us know. Information like ascenders and side bearings have their position, but they aren’t nearly as essential to learn as the following techniques.
Letter Room
Letter spacing, also known as kerning, may create a significant difference in headlines, columns, logos, and other text-based elements. It is simply the difference between each pair of letters.
Krop’s latest portfolio creator doesn’t do anything for the text in this case. The majority of the image-based text on the website decreases letter spacing to render sentences more succinct and powerful.
The example above demonstrates how letter width may have a detrimental impact on your designs. With adjusted letter spacing, small or non-anti-aliased text is the most challenging to interpret.
If you haven’t already, experiment with letter spacing in your designs; you’ll be surprised by how much of a difference it can create. For photographs, “Myriad Pro” is a good place to start, and “Trebuchet MS” is a good place to start for HTML text.
