How can I make Photoshop faster?
Optimising Photoshop’s output is critical if you deal with massive images or if you use advanced features such as HDR, Photomerge, or 3D and video layers. In this guide, we will share a few tips for optimising Photoshop’s speed and making it run smoother on your computer. Let us begin!
1. Memory Use
Photoshop is a native 64-bit programme, which means it can support as much memory as you have available. Additional RAM is beneficial when dealing with big images. By default, Photoshop uses 70% of available RAM, but you can adjust this setting in Preferences > Performance. The modifications made here will take place until Photoshop is restarted. Increasing this value is perhaps the most powerful way to speed up Photoshop.
When you use Photoshop CC to open it, you can see two choices (depending on the version) – Photoshop CC (64 bit) and Photoshop CC (32 bit). The 32-bit version supports only 1.7 to 3GB of RAM, while the 64-bit version supports as much RAM as your CPU can handle. Thus, depending on the computer you are using, selecting this method will significantly speed up the process.
2. Making Use of Scratch Disks
When you run out of RAM, the workload is transferred to the computer’s hard discs. By default, your scratch disc is the same as your Boot Partition, which already contains all of your loaded software and operating system. It is recommended to include all available hard drives as scratch discs and, more specifically, to prioritise them using the arrows underneath the Performance tab in the Preferences > Performance window. When purchasing hard drives, the following factors should be considered:
As Photoshop’s RAM is depleted, it writes to the hard disc. This is referred to as the scratch disc. To get the best effects, obtain a second hard drive in addition to the one on which Photoshop is mounted.
If possible, purchase a solid-state drive to double as your scratch disc. Solid-state drives are more costly than hard disc drives and have less storage capacity, but they have lightning-fast writing speeds.
3. Indicator of Efficiency
You can monitor Photoshop’s performance by selecting Efficiency from the status bar choices at the bottom of the document window. It will be expressed as a metric, with 100% indicating the highest performance. You can decrease the number of layers and smart artefacts to increase performance, but this will result in a more disruptive workflow.
4. Managing Cache Sizes and State Transitions
The archive maintains low-resolution copies of the files you have opened in Photoshop so that they can be redrawn easily. There are eight distinct Cache Levels, and the more Cache Levels you have, the slower Photoshop can access files. Having said that, the more Cache Levels you have, the better Photoshop can run with the files until they are opened.
When you are working with tiny pictures of a lot of textures, use Tall and Thin (web design, user interface design projects). If you are working with huge images with few layers, use Big and Flat (digital painting, photo retouching). Otherwise, leave the Default Cache Level preset alone.
Additionally, an increased number of History States would reduce results. It is adjustable on a scale of 1–1000. This will be reduced to five if it is done in a non-destructive manner. If you are a visual artist who often uses the Brush Tool, we suggest having about 100 History States.
5. Image Resolution Reduction
It is always a good idea to remember the final destination of your File before beginning work in Photoshop. If you know your image can be featured on a website with a width of 600px, avoid creating a 20-megapixel image. Resize the image first, then begin applying filters, corrections, and effects.
6. Elimination of Superfluous Documents
This is a fairly self-explanatory statement. Multiple documents open concurrently creates congestion and slows down Photoshop. When employed, you should strive for 100 per cent efficiency (you can see this in the status bar, as explained before).
7. Save in the background and save automatically
When saving large files, you can potentially continue working while Photoshop saves. The status bar indicates the status of the saving operation. If you disable it, you will still be unable to use autosave. The auto can write to the scratch discs, which will trigger issues if you do not have a lot of open space. Additionally, you can configure the autosave interval, which ranges from every five minutes to every hour.
8. Delete Clipboard and History
You will easily delete all background states and data on your clipboard. It is particularly helpful if you are working with a large number of history states and copying large images. Once picked and copied, the item would remain on the clipboard, consuming precious RAM.
9. Disable Previews and Thumbnails for Panels
You can disable the previews for Layers, Channels, and Paths in each row. Although disabling thumbnail previews speed up Photoshop, it can make it more difficult to locate layers if you are not organised. If you are consistently labelling and sorting the layers, you should have no trouble finding them even without the thumbnail previews.
10. Appropriate Layering
To begin, it is a good idea to set the status bar to display the Document Size. The first size indicates the flattened document size, and the second size after the / indicates the actual document size, which could be significantly greater than the flattened edition if you have several layers.
One of the most critical points to remember is that Adjustment Layers are much superior to duplicate layers in terms of file size, as Adjustment Layers hardly increase the file size. Flattened layers will significantly decrease the file size, but it is a significant improvement since you will remove all non-destructive edits.
