1. Know the basics
Your first move towards more successful typography is to understand a little bit about art. If you are unfamiliar with these principles, you may find that typography needs to be a very easy discipline. Yeah, if you recognise the alphabet you earned half the war right now? All that is left is to change the way it appears a little, and you have got a font yourself! In fact, typography is very complex, and it is as much science as it is art.

What is this?
Kerning requires changing the distance between two letters in a specified font. Notice that this is a different concern than monitoring, which controls the gap for all letters at once.
