What Graphic Size Should I Use For A Large Print Banner?

‘What resolution do my photographs need to be?’ we are often asked. The solution to this issue is typically very simple in the area of small format printing: the rule of thumb is usually twice the output linescreen, or roughly 300-400dpi. Higher than that, and the file size grows exponentially without genuinely enhancing quality; lower than that, and you may see jaggedness in edges and contrast regions.
However, in the realm of big size printing, this issue is significantly more difficult to answer.

Large Banners

Images on large banners, wall graphics, or fleet graphics on delivery trucks might be 10 by 20 feet in size. At 400 dpi, a picture of this scale would have an almost impractical file size of 17.2GB (and there aren’t many digital cameras that can capture a 4,608 megapixel image to begin with).
The rules for establishing picture resolution for big format are determined by three factors: viewing distance, viewing circumstances, and image kind.

Viewing Range

For an explanation of viewing distance, we must go to the human eye, as we did with colour perception. Visual acuity refers to our eyes’ capacity to distinguish detail. The greatest acuity of the human visual system is proportional to the diameter of the light detecting cones and rods on the retina, which translates mathematically to an angle (30 seconds of arc, to be precise). When we look at objects from a distance, our capacity to resolve detail decreases.

Printer

Your printer should be a business partner, capable of understanding your precise requirements and delivering on time. Allow Colour Reflections to manage your next event’s big format printing requirements. We have five decades of expertise and will provide you with the most up-to-date printing technology. We can effectively transform your big format graphic design into the highlight of your event with five sites around the United Kingdom and a proven track record of delivering for huge corporate events, expos, and trade exhibits.

Examine the Printer

Check that your printer is in good working order. By clicking Start and then selecting “Devices and Printers.” you can see the printer’s settings. Select “Printer Properties.” from the context menu when you right-click the printer you’re using. On the General tab, click the “Print Test Page” option. If a test sheet prints, the gadget is operational. If not, right-click the printer once again and choose “Troubleshoot.” Window will search for problems and provide remedies if any are discovered.

Printer Preferences

Printer settings, notably page sizes, colour printing, and duplex printing, may potentially create issues. Some printers have the capability of printing a publication properly, but the settings must first be activated in Publisher. Click “File” or press “Print” on the “Ctrl-P.” tab. If available, click “Printer Properties” and then the “Effects” tab. In the Resize Options section, pick “Print Document On” and tick the “Scale to Fit” box. To save the changes, click “OK”

Incorrect Dimensions

Because Publisher allows for the printing of a broad range of document sizes, publications may sometimes print too tiny or too big. To fix this issue, you must change the paper size in Publisher, which is distinct from altering the page size when you generate the document. Click “File” or press “Print” on the “Ctrl-P.” tab. Select the proper size from the “Usable Paper Sizes” drop-down menu in the Settings section, which shows the current paper size.

Visual acuity of the eyeballs

So, how do we set a criterion for how far the viewer is from the image? According to Fogra’s Process Criterion Digital document, a useful standard to utilise is the diagonal of the finished output – the bigger it is, the farther you need to step away in order to observe it in its entirety. In the table below, we computed the viewing distance and maximum resolution that can be seen under ideal conditions:

Resolution Item Size Viewing Distance (dpi)

859 Postcard 4′′ x 6′′

8.5′′ x 11′′ 14′′ 491

36′′ x 48′′ 60′′ (5ft) 114

Transit Bus Shelter Advertisement 47′′ x 68′′ 82′′ (7ft) 83

588′′ × 168′′ 661′′ (51ft) 11.2

576′′ x 120′′ 588′′ Semi Trailer (49ft)

As a result, we now have a guideline for estimating the amount of resolution necessary for a particular output size.

Viewing Situations

The second factor to consider is how the picture will be seen. Is there enough lighting? Is it going to move? Will the spectator be able to move? Is it conceivable that the viewer is much closer than the indicated viewing distance?

Consider an interior wall graphic and a truck trailer, which may have same size but extremely different viewing circumstances. Interior wall graphics will very certainly be highly lighted and seen up close. In such case, greater resolutions would be required. It would not be as important for the semi trailer wrap since it would be travelling most of the time and under fluctuating lighting conditions.

The Illustration

The picture itself is the final item to consider. At lesser resolutions, a low contrast or soft focus picture might be very acceptable, but an image with high contrast edges will display the consequences of lack of resolution much more prominently. Is there a lot of detail in the picture that has to be seen, such as hair or fabric? To depict fine details accurately, higher resolutions may be required.

If in doubt, consult your printer. If you are still concerned about the output quality, request a 100% sample of the picture to be printed for approval.
