Graphic Design Tips for working from home

Here are a few tips to help you work from home.

With the spread of the coronavirus affecting everything from international travel to the availability of face masks and hand sanitizer, dealing with COVID-19 in the United Kingdom has become an increasingly worrying pandemic everywhere. Working remotely is now in vogue more than ever before and can be hugely satisfying, but only if you keep your productivity up, sustain a healthy work balance, and keep connected and focused.

If you are a student of graphic design, it is probably useful to have access to your software, a printer to create hard copies of work produced and some inspiration in your working environment. Once you have all these items then you’re all set to have a home graphic design studio.

Even when there isn’t a new virus spreading, other emergencies can necessitate your sudden need to work remotely. Natural disasters, power outages and even common sick days are all reasons you might have to work at home for a few days. The good news is that you do not need an advance plan, but there are many things you can do to make working from home in an emergency successful.

1. Maintain Regular Hours
Set a schedule before you start your day or a “To-Do” list and ensure that you follow it as closely as possible. Having clearly structured workdays and guidelines for when to work and when to call it a day does help formalise many people that work from home. This will help you, in turn, create and stick to a healthy work balance. Remember that working is hard does not necessarily mean working smart. It is not all about the hours! That said, working remotely sometimes means extending your day or starting early to accommodate someone else’s time zone.

2. Get Comfy
Don’t underestimate the importance of getting comfortable and making your work environment a positive and focused experience. It may be worth choosing a certain area in your home that you can associate with your job and leave when you’re off the clock — that means away off the couch, out of bed and the biscuit tin. If you don’t have a desk, use your dining room table or make use of a coffee table, but be careful not to strain your back and maintain good posture.

This will make you feel like you’re at an “office,” which should, in turn, help you avoid distractions, and leave your work behind at the end of the day. We understand that not everyone has a distinct office in their home and space may be an issue. Instead, dedicate a desk area and if you must be creative to achieve the same effect than well done to you.

3. Stay connected with your colleagues.
If you work in a team, make sure to check in regularly with your peers or your clients in the graphic design circle the same way you would in the office. Use your phone, email and social media to interact with others but try not to get distracted checking out your best friend’s wedding photos on Facebook while you envisage your own being even better.

There will be a sense of isolation of course, and it varies on how well your team communicates, or how much they’re willing to sustain a certain level communication using other tools besides messages and emails.

4. Look for Training Opportunities
When you’re not in an office with your fellow employees, you might miss out on training and skills development courses that are taught in person. You may wish to change career or reflect on an online journey where you can be your own boss. In addition to career change ambitions, if there is a course you need for career development, ask if you can take it. Also, if you get the go-ahead to take a course online the skill you learn could be invaluable in a variety of ways.
