Designers will aim to make art magical by distinguishing businesses from their competitors in the marketplace by employing creative, colourful and innovative approaches to branding. In turn, this creativity takes the form of visual messages that express the character of a company and define its relationships with its consumers.

For instance, a graphic design commonly found in advertising promotes the marketable qualities of commercial products engaging with an audience.

The good news for newbies is that there is a lot of work out there and with demand outstripping supply this should itself encourage you if not financially.

Talking of finance, people turn to Graphic Design not just for the financial gains that typically see comfortable salaries well above the average UK salary income but because of an underlying passion to be creative. Salaries differ between In-House and agency since, at the middle level, a designer can expect to earn £26,000 to £38,000. Salaries for senior graphic designers or creative leads range from £38,000 to £60,000. Freelance work, on the other hand, can be lucrative, flexible and projects vary widely but it is not uncommon to hear freelancers making over £45,000 per annum depending on their workload.

Since graphic designers use their creative skill and energy to produce visual ideas and concepts for brands and companies it goes without saying most designers will be creative and may have a passion for art and design. You will typically take images, graphics, and designs, and merge them to create exclusive ideas companies can use in digital, print, or electronic media. For Chen our Senior Graphics Design Tutor “Graphic Design is not just my hobby It’s my passion and also my one true love.”

For those of you inspired to read there are some texts I recommend – not as a DIY read and become a graphic designer which would be extremely difficult without a teacher and since we offer courses for that – but for a text that will help with your overall knowledge of graphic design…

Since there are so many wonderful books about graphic design that it is difficult to select a top five. However, the following titles come highly recommended and provide a decent overview to teach you graphic design: 1) The Elements of Typographic Style by Robert Bringhurst, 2) Logo: The Reference Guide To Symbols and Logotypes by Michael Evamy, 3) How to be a Graphic Designer, Without Losing Your Soul by Adrian Shaughnessy and 4) Just My Type by Simon Garfield and one of Noah’s favourite for being a good all-rounder demonstrating how a good font communicates to the reader on an almost subliminal level and how it influences and impacts designs!
